Dwangwa Water Supply Scheme is in Nkhotakota District approximately 60 Km from Nkhotakota Boma along the M5 Salima-Mzuzu road. The scheme is located at longitude 120 34’ S and 340 09’ E in the Central Region of Malawi. Dwangwa water supply scheme is currently serving about 10,790 people at only the centre of the town. The existing water supply system has surpassed its design life as it is providing only 500 m3/day against a current growing water demand of 1,441 m3/day. The yields of the boreholes are drastically dwindling due to low groundwater recharge. There is no water supply coverage within the surrounding areas of Kasitu, Banga, Mtupi, Liwaladzi, Msenjere, Mowe cane growers, Ethanol Company, Kasasa and Matiki residential areas. It is against this background that CRWB plans to rehabilitate, upgrade and expand the existing system to improve the situation and increase the water supply coverage to supply 82,283 people in year 2035 with a demand of 14,056 m3/day.Read Less

Nkhotakota Water Supply Scheme is located at Nkhotakota Boma on the west coast of Lake Malawi and 200 Km north east of Lilongwe and at longitude 120 55’ S and 340 18’ E in the Central Region of Malawi. The 2018 population for Nkhotakota existing water supply area is 29,819 people (based on 2.8 % annual growth rate-NSO, 2008). The estimated 2035 population for Nkhotakota town and surrounding areas is 59,431. Nkhotakota Boma and the surrounding areas have all the necessary basic economic infrastructure such as roads, telephone and electricity. However, the piped water supply system operated by CRWB is in a dilapidated state as it has outlived its lifespan. The scheme experiences intermittent water supply and low tap pressures in some areas. This is due to inadequate water supply production due to low yielding and inadequate number of boreholes at Chitenje well field. The current water supply for the scheme is 1,450 m3/day against a water demand of 3,451 m3/day. Currently, the Boma has a daily water supply shortfall of 58 % and, if nothing is done, the shortfall would escalate to 86 % by 2035 which will require 10,152 m3/day. The above highlighted challenges are negatively contributing to the attainment of sustainable development goal 6 and efforts put in place curtail occurrence of both waterborne and water washed diseases at Nkhotakota Town. The challenges are also highly contributing to cash flow problems for Nkhotakota Water Supply Scheme. Nkhamenya market centre is one of the areas in Kasungu District which is not currently supplied with potable piped water. Although the centre has other essential services like electricity and telecommunications, it does not have piped water supply. As such, more than 14,259 people have no access to potable water and instead they resort to unsafe water sources. In addition, the access to basic sanitation is currently at 89 %. Namitete-Chileka, Msundwe-Walilanji market centres are located on the western side of Lilongwe District between 51 km and 70 km on the Lilongwe – Mchinji Road. The settlement pattern in Namitete-Chileka and Msundwe is mainly clustered along the main road. Currently, Namitete-Chileka and Msundwe market centres have no piped water supply system. As a result, people get water from hand-pump-fitted boreholes, rivers and streams which is not suitable for consumption and for the type of settlement in these centres.Read Less
