Artificial intelligence (AI), often combined with other technologies such as mathematical modeling and computing, can play a vital role in helping developing countries achieve their development goals. However, there are significant gaps that prevent the integration and adoption of AI technologies in a responsible way. Challenges include a skills gap due in part to weaknesses in technical universities undergraduate and graduate curricula that seek to support the skills needed to drive innovation and ensure adoption, but also a glaring lack of infrastructure and equipment in the area. In order to support the development of a sustainable approach to encourage the talents of our country to engage in multidisciplinary and responsible research and innovation in AI and computing tools, this project aims to build and equipping a mathematical modelling, computer science and artificial intelligence laboratory. The laboratory will conduct research and innovation in AI, mathematics and computer science by meeting the capacity needs of the public and private sectors of the country and the sub-region, with a focus on development projects, development in agriculture, security and education. Specifically, the lab will seek to deepen our understanding of how to develop and apply responsible AI tools to advance computational, mathematics, security, biomedical, agricultural and ecological sciences, strengthen national and international collaboration of public universities with the private sector, and to build capacity for the responsible use of AI to support the most vulnerable communities in our country and in the sub-region.Read Less
