Tapiwa Muzata has a PhD and is an ACCA (UK) Member. His PhD, which he completed in 2018, quantified the cost of corporate governance failures in listed companies, formulated a governance index based on King III and King IV recommendations, determined the role of executive compensation in exacerbating governance problems and ascertained the socio-economic consequences of corporate governance failures. His research interests have since transitioned into Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) research. As an academic whose corporate experience, up to senior management level, spans over ten years in the financial services industry, his research approach integrates practical experience in the fields of finance, investments, treasury management, risk management and internal controls with ESG. Tapiwa is well acquainted with the Sustainability Accounting Standards, Sustainability Accounting Standard Board’s Conceptual Framework which sets out the basic concepts, principles, definitions, objectives and the framework’s sustainability topics which address sustainability dimensions under issues around the environment, social capital, human capital, business model and innovation and leadership and governance.
Furthermore, Tapiwa has experience as a Research Assistant and Project Coordinator of the UNISA-AFRICA UNION Agenda 2063 Project. The project focusses on specialised research and capacity development in economic development, blue economy, youth business development, women entrepreneurship, and sustainable business enterprises. His role contributed to the project’s strategy, managing relationships with various external stakeholders, writing funding proposals, managing research funds, liaising with other UNISA departments on project matters, project administration, and other ad hoc project related tasks. Since April 2017, the project team’s research outputs were academic articles, policy briefs submitted to the African Union Commission, and hosted workshops facilitated by internationally distinguished experts.
Between 2011 and 2014, Tapiwa facilitated Work Readiness Training Programmes on behalf of African Resources Training Group (ARTG) at Old Mutual, Sanlam, Santam and Metropolitan and on behalf of Skills4Success CC at Zurich Insurance and Linkd Environmental Services Pty. Ltd.
Currently, he is a Unisa postdoctoral fellow and team member of Inhlanyelo Hub (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Unisa) contributing to strategy, business advisory, ethics, sustainability, finance, governance, and course design, development and facilitation.
