JETRO, the Japan External Trade Organization, is a government-related organization that works to promote mutual trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world. Originally established in 1958 to promote Japanese exports abroad, JETRO's core focus in the 21st century has shifted towards helping small to medium size Japanese firms maximize their global export potential. Its global network spans over 40 offices within Japan consisting of the JETRO Tokyo Headquarters, JETRO Osaka, the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO) and its domestic regional offices as well as 74 regional offices in 54 countries including 8 in Africa.
Established in 1961, JETRO Johannesburg, as a sub-Saharan region representative office, plays a fundamental role in promoting and facilitating the development of a mutually beneficial economic relationship between South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and Japan.
